Sound Familiar?
- I’d love to do a
better job teaching my kids about the value of
things.
-
- I’m not that happy
with our allowance system but I don’t have the
time or energy to create something more elaborate.
- I'd like to change my
kids’ sense of entitlement.
- I think I've
accidentally taught my kids that the price of anything
is “how much whining they need to do" to get
it.
- It's unclear what Mom
and Dad will buy and what the kids need to use their
own money for.
- I’d like my kids
to learn the skill of saving up for things, the joy of
anticipation and the reward of buying something
they’ve saved up for.
- I know some parenting
experts say I shouldn’t tie the kids’
allowance to their chores and that they should do their
chores just because they SHOULD……but they
don’t!
- I just want to pull my
hair out when I buy clothing for the kids that they
LOVED at the store, but won't wear once we get
home.
And from your kids:
- Other kids get
more.
- You forgot to give me my
allowance.
- Other kids get
more!
These quotes are just a small selection from parents
and kids. You may have heard (or said) them before -
these seem to be universal issues. And if you’re
like many parents, you’ve read several books,
talked with friends and family, perhaps searched the
internet for guidance and concluded:
- Advice is too general
and philosophical. That’s useful, but I really
need specifics.
- It's hard to come up
with a great system, and it takes a lot of effort.
- It's easier to just fix
an amount and give it to the kids.
